Nokia introduces mobile widgets. Again…

April16

nokia web run timeAs can be seen on their official blog and on their product info Nokia is introducing a new widgets solution, dedicated to S60 3rd edition handsets.
A closer look at it explains things better: They are providing a stand alone web applications using their browser (yes you get the awkard mouse moving mechanisms also ;)).
The solution is not available yet anyway.
Several open questions remain:

  • Is Nokia’s Widsets still a priority? If so, why a second initiative?
  • What do all the other manufacturers do? Will they all provide a proprietary solution?

One thing’s for sure, this creates even more mobile widgets awareness and this is very positive.
My guess is that Nokia may be the first to announce, but will not be the first to market, stay tuned in the coming days ;)

Update from allaboutsymbian: “Nokia has gone widget-mad, introducing full widget (mini-apps built on Ajax and Javascript) support into S60, beginning with S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2 (so we’re looking at next year for the first devices with full widget support)

blue flavor - mobile UI thoughts

July23

A very interesting blog that talks about mobile user interface, one of the major challenges of today’s mobile computing. You’ll find an interesting series of slides and articles and even materials that are worth reading if you have anything to do with mobile User Interface design.

A blue flavored blog.

Bloglines, massive and ubiquitious news reading

July22

bloglines screenshotIf you’re a news eater like I am (53 RSS feeds updated very often), then you’re probably using a news aggregator either in the form of a software or online. I have used for a while the excellent Vienna (mac) news reader. However, I’ve had to switch to Windows for a while (at work) and never found any good news reader.

The light came when I discovered Bloglines online news aggregator. The advantages:

  • Most of the features or native software are found, including efficient keyboard navigation (very important when you read a lot of news)
  • Ubiquity: You can access your news from any browser, including a well crafted mobile interface
  • It includes search agents that crowl though thousands of blogs and then present it as a classic subsciption.

An don’t be fooled by the name, it’s not only about blogs but any RSS/Atom sources.

Give it a try here, it’s free!

Why not a mac - or why you want a macbook

July19

macbookOk, either you lived in a cave in the past 2 months, either you’ve asked yourself “Hey why wouldn’t I this ugly Dell Lattitude or Dimension to get one of the new gorgeous Macbooks”?

Well at least if you haven’t I’ll try to make you think about it :)

So here are the few reasons that should definitly get you in:

  • Look & Feel: It’s small but yet features a 13.3-inch glossy widescreen, you may love it in white or like it in black
  • Really Cool software: I’m here speaking about Mac OS X, its high quality bundled applications and the big variety of freewares and sharewares available. Just 2 examples:
    • OS X makes virus and spyware history
    • OS X is stable to the point that I can spend 2 months without ever needing to restart my mac!
  • Feature Set: For just $1099, you get Core Duo, an integrated iSight, a remote control (Frontrow) to convert your macbook into a media center, a widescreen and the rest of a normal laptop!
  • The best of both worlds: Ok, we agree that if you buy a Mac, it’s not to use it as a Windows machine but sometimes, it can be convenient (for games for instance or specialized software). It’s what Bootcamp provides you!

A few more advices and thoughts:

  • On the downside, the VGA/DVI connection is a $19 option and the modem is sells for $49!!!
  • If you take one and want to play games, be aware that it’s not the machine of choice, although you can decently play HL2 for instance if you boost the RAM to 2GB (and don’t buy it on apple.com since it’s almost 3 times more expensive)

So if you’re intrested, check-out Apple’s web site for more info.
